During the flight, a failure in the service module's oxygen system changed the mission. The crew shut down the command module and used the lunar module as a lifeboat. Equipment built for a landing now had to support the journey home.

On the ground, flight controllers worked through the emergency. This photograph records activity in Mission Control during the final day of the return. It shows the work behind the mission, rather than a reconstruction of the accident.

On April seventeenth, all three astronauts returned safely to Earth. Apollo thirteen did not achieve its planned lunar landing. Its story is also the work of the crew and ground teams who brought them home.
