Audio clipping

Clipping occurs when a signal exceeds a representation or processing stage's available level and its peaks are cut or distorted.

Updated 2026-10-29 · Topicut editorial

Meaning

Clipping occurs when a signal exceeds a representation or processing stage's available level and its peaks are cut or distorted.

A practical example

An overdriven narration may contain flattened peaks and harsh consonants even if its exported volume is later reduced.

What to check

Turning down a clipped export does not reconstruct lost peaks. Inspect the source and prevent overload earlier in the recording or processing chain.
