Word error rate

Word error rate compares a transcript with a reference using substitutions, deletions and insertions divided by reference-word count.

Updated 2026-10-29 · Topicut editorial

Meaning

Word error rate compares a transcript with a reference using substitutions, deletions and insertions divided by reference-word count.

A practical example

If a ten-word reference has one substituted word and one deletion, the illustrative error rate is 2 divided by 10, or 20 percent.

What to check

The score depends on tokenization and the reference. It does not measure factual truth, subtitle readability or whether one critical name was wrong.
