Bit depth

Audio bit depth describes the precision available for each sample in an uncompressed integer representation.

Updated 2026-10-29 · Topicut editorial

Meaning

Audio bit depth describes the precision available for each sample in an uncompressed integer representation.

A practical example

A production handoff may specify 16-bit PCM, which is a different parameter from a compressed file's bitrate.

What to check

Do not compare bit depth directly with kbps as if they were interchangeable quality scores. Record the encoding, sample rate and channel count together.
