Sample rate is the number of audio samples represented per second, expressed in hertz.

Updated 2026-10-29 · Topicut editorial

Meaning

Sample rate is the number of audio samples represented per second, expressed in hertz.

A practical example

A recording tagged 48,000 Hz represents 48,000 sampling positions per second per channel; it does not mean the speaker makes that many sounds.

What to check

Changing the label without proper resampling can alter playback. Check the actual stream metadata rather than inferring rate from a filename.
