Subtitle reading speed checker

Locate overlaps, ordering problems, long lines and fast captions using your own thresholds.

Free · no sign-up · runs in your browser. Your input is not uploaded or stored by this tool. Up to 1 MiB UTF-8 text / 5,000 plain-text cues.

Plain text only. Markup, cue positioning, non-numeric VTT IDs, NOTE/STYLE/REGION blocks and header metadata are rejected explicitly; they are never silently removed.

Your review thresholds

Counts Unicode code points, including spaces and punctuation, excluding line breaks. Emoji and combined characters can count as more than one. These defaults are preferences, not universal platform standards. Overlaps may be intentional.

How to use it

  1. Paste or open your plain subtitles.
  2. Choose maximum characters/second and characters/line for your audience.
  3. Review the cue numbers, timestamps and findings. Download the report, then edit your source file.

What to check

CPS includes spaces and punctuation, excludes line breaks and counts Unicode code points. These are adjustable review thresholds, not universal platform requirements. Simultaneous cues can be intentional; this checker does not hear the audio, judge the wording or repair files automatically.
