Choose documentary topics by available evidence, not just a dramatic title

A topic can sound compelling and still be expensive to support visually.

A topic can sound compelling and still be expensive to support visually. Before drafting a long narration, test whether you can find evidence for its central question and usable material for its most important scenes. This is an editorial planning exercise, not a forecast of search traffic.

Make the decision explicit

Start with one sentence describing what the viewer should understand differently at the end. List three claims needed to reach that conclusion. For each, record a candidate primary record and a plausible visual treatment. Separate an image that illustrates a subject from evidence that establishes a particular event. If the strongest claim has no supporting record, narrow or change the question before generating a polished script.

A worked example

Imagine a fictional film about a bridge closure. One candidate topic asks who secretly caused it; another asks how the inspection process identified a structural problem. Suppose the available material is an inspection report, a diagram and photographs of the bridge. The second question can be investigated with those records. The first would require additional evidence about people and intent. Write both ideas down, then select the one your actual sources can support.

Review before handoff

Keep rejected ideas and the reason for rejection in the brief. An unavailable image does not always kill a topic: a clearly labelled diagram may explain a mechanism. It does change the production plan. Do not present a general archive photograph as the exact closure or imply that a source list automatically establishes permission to reuse every asset.
