Video essays and documentaries can overlap, but a production brief should make clear whether the main work is arguing an interpretation, reporting an event or explaining a mechanism. That choice affects the evidence, the narration and what viewers expect the pictures to prove.
Make the decision explicit
State the central question, the position the piece will take and the role of the visual material. An argumentative essay may use carefully selected examples to explore an interpretation. An account of a specific event needs stronger attention to dates, participants and what was known at the time. Neither label excuses unsupported factual claims.
A worked example
Consider two invented projects about abandoned railways. One examines how abandonment is represented in popular imagery; the other reconstructs why a particular line closed. The first might organize around themes and competing interpretations. The second needs records about that line and a chronology. A generic train photograph can provide atmosphere in either piece, but cannot establish the closure date or the reasons for it.
Review before handoff
Ask a collaborator to describe the intended deliverable after reading the brief. If they expect an investigation while you expect an opinion essay, resolve the mismatch before outsourcing or generating assets. Store the selected treatment with the script revision. Choosing a genre is a planning decision, not a claim that one format is inherently more original or monetizable.
Put the idea to work

Runtime should follow the amount of explanation the question needs.

Choose documentary topics by available evidence, not just a dramatic title
A topic can sound compelling and still be expensive to support visually.
