Original illustrative diagram: Zero start → Ordered chapters → Final interval.

Validate the final YouTube chapter, not only the timestamp list

A chapter list can look orderly while leaving an unusably short final section.

A chapter list can look orderly while leaving an unusably short final section. Validate the intervals implied by the timestamps and the actual recording length, not only the number of visible lines.

Make the decision explicit

Use the current official requirements as a baseline: the manual list starts at zero, has at least three ascending timestamps and has sufficiently long chapters. Topicut's formatter checks a ten-second minimum against the duration you supply, including the last interval. It cannot determine whether your channel or video has access to the feature.

A worked example

An invented list starts at zero, sixty and one hundred twenty seconds. If the video lasts one hundred eighty seconds, the final interval is sixty seconds. If a revised video lasts one hundred twenty-five seconds, the final interval is only five seconds. The list itself has not changed, but its fit with the recording has. Supplying the correct duration is essential to detecting the problem.

Review before handoff

Check every timestamp after a new introduction, trim or audio edit. Titles should describe the actual sections rather than promise unsupported findings. Copy the reviewed list into the intended workflow and inspect the resulting player behavior. Passing a formatting check is not a guarantee that YouTube will display chapters or treat the content as eligible for any other feature.

Reference and editorial notes

  • YouTube: video chapters

Test the final chapter explicitly

Use this synthetic list with an actual-duration input of 180 seconds:

0:00 Introduction
1:00 The evidence
2:00 Conclusion

The segments are 60, 60 and 60 seconds. Now keep the same list and set duration to 125 seconds: the final segment is only five seconds, so the formatter should reject it. This catches a mistake that inspecting the start timestamps alone misses.

Follow the chapter tutorial to reproduce both cases. Then check the durations against your actual final export rather than an early script estimate. A music tail, trimmed opening or replaced scene changes the video timeline even when chapter titles are unchanged.

The chapter formatter checks timing basics; it does not inspect a YouTube account, retrieve a video or guarantee that chapters appear. Keep the source of the runtime measurement and review the description after upload. If the cut changes, regenerate the list from the new cut instead of reusing the previous description unchecked.

Automatic dubbing still needs an editorial review pass

Automatic dubbing can reduce language-production work, but a fluent-sounding track can still change a name, number, qualification or speaker relationship.
