Subtitle drift

Subtitle drift is a synchronization error that changes over the course of a recording instead of staying at one constant offset.

Updated 2026-10-29 · Topicut editorial

Meaning

Subtitle drift is a synchronization error that changes over the course of a recording instead of staying at one constant offset.

A practical example

A cue may be correct near the beginning but late near the end if the captions were prepared for a differently timed version.

What to check

A uniform time shift cannot repair changing drift. Compare several anchors and investigate edits, time stretching and source-version differences first.
