When a space explainer needs a diagram instead of another archive clip
A beautiful launch clip may establish atmosphere without explaining an orbital relationship.
A beautiful launch clip may establish atmosphere without explaining an orbital relationship. In a science explainer, choose the representation that makes the mechanism understandable and distinguish that illustration from a recording of an actual event.
Make the decision explicit
For each passage, ask whether the viewer needs to recognize an object, follow a change or compare quantities. Archive footage can identify a vehicle or show recorded behavior. A simplified diagram may better explain relative motion. Label simplifications that affect interpretation, and keep the source for the factual relationship separate from the source for the visual asset.
A worked example
For an invented lesson about relative motion, use two circles and a moving marker to compare viewpoints. A diagram can pause at three positions while the narrator describes what changes. An archive image shown beside it should be identified as context, not proof that the diagram depicts one specific mission. Test the graphic in both a wide frame and a small preview so labels remain understandable.
Review before handoff
NASA hosts material under published usage guidance, but the hosting domain alone is not a blanket reuse decision. Inspect individual credits and third-party notices. Also check whether a diagram implies scale, speed or direction that the narration does not support. A clear original illustration is often more useful than an impressive but unrelated clip.

Build a documentary outline around questions that can be answered
A useful outline tells the writer what each section must resolve.

Choose a documentary length that fits the question without padding
Runtime should follow the amount of explanation the question needs.

Choose documentary topics by available evidence, not just a dramatic title
A topic can sound compelling and still be expensive to support visually.
