Calibrate narration pace using names, numbers and real pauses
A script containing technical names, dates and long quantities may take longer to deliver than an equally long conversational paragraph.
A script containing technical names, dates and long quantities may take longer to deliver than an equally long conversational paragraph. A word-count estimate becomes more useful when calibrated against the kind of text the finished video will actually contain.
Make the decision explicit
Select a passage with representative vocabulary, not the easiest introduction. Read it naturally or use the intended voice settings in a separately authorized production workflow. Measure the complete interval and record whether it includes pauses. Compare the result with the estimator and adjust the planning rates rather than changing the measured recording to match an assumed rate.
A worked example
An illustrative 240-word passage takes two minutes including twelve seconds of deliberate pauses. Its overall rate is 120 words per minute. The speaking-only interval would be 108 seconds, producing a different ratio. Both calculations can be meaningful if labelled. For runtime planning, the overall interval is usually the relevant one because the viewer experiences the pauses too.
Review before handoff
Listen especially to unit names, abbreviations and number groupings. A fast reading that is technically intelligible may still leave no time to inspect a diagram. Save the calibration passage and settings with the estimate so later revisions do not silently inherit an unrelated pace assumption. The free calculator does not generate or measure the audio.
Put the idea to work
Read speaking rate and use the related free workflow tool for its stated, limited task. Neither link replaces the review described above.
