Estimate mixed-language narration without treating every character as a word
Mixed-language scripts can make a single words-per-minute value misleading.
Mixed-language scripts can make a single words-per-minute value misleading. A paragraph can combine space-separated words, Han characters, abbreviations and numbers whose spoken form differs substantially from their written length.
Make the decision explicit
Identify the estimator's counting rule before interpreting its result. Topicut's free estimator separates Han characters from non-Han word tokens and lets you choose rates. That is a transparent planning convention, not a universal linguistic tokenizer. For other writing systems or unusual segmentation, use a measured reading as the main calibration rather than trusting the default range.
A worked example
Imagine a passage containing an English product name inside Chinese narration. Counting the product name as one written token says little about how many syllables the narrator will speak. A longer date can likewise be read in several forms. Keep the planned spoken version in the script and test the complete passage instead of multiplying the total character count by an English word rate.
Review before handoff
Compare beginning, middle and end sections when the script's language mix changes. Record the counting assumptions beside the result, then replace the estimate with actual audio duration before preparing final captions. A numerically precise estimate can still be based on the wrong units; displaying more decimal places does not remove that uncertainty.
Put the idea to work

Calibrate narration pace using names, numbers and real pauses
A script containing technical names, dates and long quantities may take longer to deliver than an equally long conversational paragraph.

Plan background music around speech, not the other way round
Background music should support the story without making narration harder to follow.

Record clean narration before relying on noise repair
Noise repair is easier to judge when the original recording is already controlled.
