Plan background music around speech, not the other way round

Background music should support the story without making narration harder to follow.

Background music should support the story without making narration harder to follow. A fixed low music setting can be a starting point, but audibility changes with arrangement, voice tone, playback equipment and the density of a particular passage.

Make the decision explicit

Choose a passage with quiet speech and another with a dense musical section. Compare voice alone, music alone and the combination. Plan fades around scene boundaries and examine whether important words remain clear. Record the exact music source and reuse basis separately from decisions about mix level.

A worked example

For an invented comparison, a sparse piano track sits comfortably beneath a paragraph until a stronger chord enters during a key sentence. Reducing the entire soundtrack may make other sections too quiet. A local adjustment or a different musical arrangement can be preferable. The decision should be checked by listening rather than inferred from one peak meter reading.

Review before handoff

Check headphones, a small speaker and mono playback when practical. Preserve the clean narration and the mix settings so a caption or picture revision does not require guessing what changed in the soundtrack. Attribution text is not a music license, and an appealing track is not automatically appropriate for every publication or audience.

Calibrate narration pace using names, numbers and real pauses

A script containing technical names, dates and long quantities may take longer to deliver than an equally long conversational paragraph.

Estimate mixed-language narration without treating every character as a word
