Plain caption conversion and styled subtitles need different workflows
A subtitle converter can preserve words and timestamps while still being unable to represent every feature in a source file.
A subtitle converter can preserve words and timestamps while still being unable to represent every feature in a source file. Before converting, identify whether the file is plain timed text or carries positioning, styling, annotations or other specialized information.
Make the decision explicit
Keep the original file and make the converter's supported subset explicit. Topicut's browser converter deliberately rejects unsupported markup and settings rather than silently stripping them. If those features are essential, choose an appropriate editing workflow and test the result in the intended player. A successful plain conversion is not proof of full feature equivalence.
A worked example
Consider a fictional caption with a speaker positioned near the top of the frame to avoid a diagram. A simple text-only export may retain the sentence but lose that placement. The words remain readable in the file while the delivered player covers the diagram. This is a workflow mismatch, not necessarily a timestamp error. Test the feature that motivated the styling instead of only comparing the text.
Review before handoff
For a genuinely plain file, check the opening and final cues after conversion and compare visible wording. Keep millisecond separators and file headers consistent with the target format. Avoid repeated round trips through converters merely to obtain a new extension. The useful outcome is a tested deliverable with documented limits, not a file whose name ends in the expected letters.
Put the idea to work
