Original illustrative diagram: File page → Metadata → Reuse review.

What to record from a Wikimedia Commons file page before editing

A direct image download is convenient, but it can detach the file from its creator, description and licensing context.

A direct image download is convenient, but it can detach the file from its creator, description and licensing context. Record the source page before editing so later review does not depend on recognizing the picture from memory.

Make the decision explicit

Capture the file-page identifier, creator attribution, original file link, stated license version and retrieval date. Read the relevant terms rather than relying only on a thumbnail badge. Note changes you intend to make, such as cropping or adding labels. Keep the record associated with the exact downloaded file rather than any visually similar search result.

A worked example

In an invented workflow, two photographs show the same building from nearly the same viewpoint. One is a historic scan with an incomplete attribution; the other is a recent photograph with a clear file page. A filename such as station.jpg does not distinguish them. A source record linked to the selected file prevents the second photograph's metadata from being accidentally attached to the first.

Review before handoff

Use an attribution formatter only after checking the record. Formatting a link does not establish permission, and a Commons hosting page is not a professional opinion on a particular reuse. If the circumstances are unclear, retain the uncertainty and obtain appropriate review instead of inventing a license or dropping the asset's context.

Put the idea to work

Read source snapshot and use the related free workflow tool for its stated, limited task. Neither link replaces the review described above.

A record that survives handoff

Keep the file-description URL rather than only the raw image URL. Record the displayed title, credited creator, exact license wording/link, observation date and the downloaded file’s own identifier. If different parts of the page disagree, preserve that disagreement and pause publication for review.

Use this working record format:

Shot reference:
File description URL:
Creator as displayed:
License statement and license URL:
Changes made (crop, labels, color):
Observed on:
Reviewer and unresolved questions:

The source-credit tutorial shows how to turn supplied fields into a readable draft. Its example.com record is deliberately synthetic and is not an asset you may use. Formatting a record does not confirm that a license is valid, that a person has consented, or that trademarks are cleared. Return to the original description and the linked terms for each actual asset.

Link the completed record to the precise shot version. If you replace the image, do not carry forward the old creator or license just because the new image looks similar. A source snapshot documents what was observed; it does not resolve later rights questions automatically.
