Original illustrative diagram: Narration claim → Image context → Match.

Avoid the right-looking archive image from the wrong time or place

An archive image can be visually plausible while contradicting the scene it accompanies.

An archive image can be visually plausible while contradicting the scene it accompanies. Matching a general subject is not the same as matching the person, location, date or event asserted in the narration.

Make the decision explicit

Write the concrete visual claim for each important shot. Check the original description and provenance against that claim. Classify the image as direct evidence, context or illustration. If a useful photograph is from another period, either choose a different visual or clearly frame it as illustrative rather than relying on the audience not noticing the mismatch.

A worked example

Imagine a fictional segment about a railway station before renovation. A convenient photograph shows the same station after a new platform was added. It may establish present-day appearance but cannot honestly demonstrate the earlier layout. A dated plan or a labelled diagram might answer the question more accurately than an attractive full-screen photograph.

Review before handoff

Inspect captions embedded in images, visible equipment and cropped-out context. Do not infer an exact year from a general aesthetic. Record unresolved details and allow a shot to remain missing during planning. A slower, explicit replacement decision is preferable to letting automatic relevance stand in for a verified historical association.
