Original illustrative diagram: Label → Context → Intended use.

A public-domain label is a starting point for asset review

A public-domain label is useful information, but a production decision still needs the source, the specific work and the intended use.

A public-domain label is useful information, but a production decision still needs the source, the specific work and the intended use. Avoid turning a search filter into a universal promise about every right or every jurisdiction.

Make the decision explicit

Record the original statement and the basis provided by the source. Check that it concerns the selected file rather than only a surrounding page. Keep creator and provenance information even when a particular credit may not be a copyright condition. Other contextual questions can remain separate from the copyright status described by the label.

A worked example

For an invented example, an old photograph is freely available as a scan while a modern annotated version adds new visual material. Selecting the annotated file because it is clearer changes what needs review. A broad description of the historical photograph does not automatically describe every later addition or imply that an unrelated site's scan has been authenticated.

Review before handoff

Treat uncertain cases as unresolved rather than forcing a yes-or-no result from a formatter. Consult the source's guidance and seek qualified review when the intended use requires it. Topicut can help organize a supplied record; it does not replace the judgment needed to determine whether the actual asset and publication context are suitable.

Put the idea to work

Read public domain footage and use the related free workflow tool for its stated, limited task. Neither link replaces the review described above.
