Original illustrative diagram: Source detail → Output grid → Viewing test.

Choose 720p or 1080p from source detail and the viewing task

An export resolution names a pixel grid, not the amount of original detail in the source.

An export resolution names a pixel grid, not the amount of original detail in the source. A larger frame can be useful for layout or compatibility, but it cannot by itself turn a small blurry scan into a high-detail original.

Make the decision explicit

Inspect the important visuals at the intended display size. Determine whether text, diagrams and fine detail remain legible after the planned crop. Separate a decision to upscale for delivery from a claim that the underlying evidence was captured at that resolution. Record the source dimensions and the output settings for later comparison.

A worked example

For an invented archive sequence, a small photograph is placed beside an original explanatory diagram. A larger output grid can preserve the diagram's sharp labels while the photograph remains limited by its source. Enlarging the photograph alone does not create missing historical detail. A restrained layout may communicate more honestly than filling the frame with aggressive enhancement.

Review before handoff

Compare representative exports rather than only still previews. Compression, bitrate and playback scaling also affect the result. Use the aspect-ratio calculator for dimensions, then inspect the actual file. Avoid declaring one resolution universally sufficient or superior for every subject, audience or platform.

Estimate video size with audio included, then measure the export

A video-size estimate should include both picture and sound and should state whether the units are decimal or binary.
